Losing weight is a goal that many people are striving for. While it seems like the process would be singled out in one proven method for everyone by now, it’s far more complicated than that because everyone has different body chemistry, different lifestyles and different levels of commitment to any weight loss program.
Just Ten Pounds…
It would seem, however, that losing 10 pounds should be a fairly easily accomplished goal for the majority of dieters, yet the loss of even 10 pounds can be a significant accomplishment for those who have struggled with the loss of even a couple of pounds, previously.
Losing 10 pounds doesn’t simply mean that you shed 10 of your body’s pounds of fat. Exactly what happens internally when you lose 10 pounds depends on a few key factors, like how overweight you were to begin with, how quickly you lost the weight and what kind of a diet you went on to trim down.
What You Could Be Losing
As most of your body is made out of water, and of course, fat and muscle, when you go on diet that either restricts your caloric intake too much or cuts out an entire category of food, like a zero-carb diet, it’s possible to see the scale go down by five to 10 pounds in one week. But when that happens, it’s probably not real fat loss; it’s mostly water. It’s much healthier, according to medical professionals, to “reasonably” reduce calories while staying moderately active, allowing for a slower, steadier weight loss.
Patience, the Dieter’s Best Friend
On any diet, after you’ve lost some water weight, what you lose next is either fat or muscle. Ideally you want to lose only fat, and prevent the loss of muscle. Losing muscle mass will result in your metabolism dropping, because muscle burns more calories than fat, but you also become susceptible to bone loss and your immune capacity is also decreased. If it comes off too quickly, it may be gained back quickly, and if it’s muscle that you lost, when you regain the weight, it will return as fat, not muscle, so a little bit of patience is a KEY factor when attempting to diet for weight loss.
